Obzor Hotels - getting to and from and around once there

The town of Obzor is relatively small, with population of slightly over 2,000 people. It is situated 65 km south of Varna or alternatively, 73km north of Bourgas. It lies in the skirts of the eastern part of the Stara Planina Mountain with the mountain ridge raising to the west of the city and the Dvoynitsa river bounding it to the north.

The long beach by the town extends from the St. Atanas cape to the north to the southern Mona Petra cape to the south.

The town’s beach is followed by a small nestling cove and a beach named Irakli after an ancient village of the same name. The St. Nikola cape is several kilometres further to the south where the Balkan Mountains slope into the Black Sea.

Obzor (Bulgarian: Обзор; Greek: Naulochos or Tetranaulochos, Latin: Naulochus, Tetranaulochus, or Templum Iovis) is a small town and seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. It is part of Nesebar municipality, Burgas Province.

The Thracian and ancient Greek name of Obzor was Naulochos, a small port on the coast of Thrace, a colony of Mesembria. The ancient Romans named it Templum Iovis (Temple of Jupiter); Pliny called it Tetranaulochus. During the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, it was known as Gözeken. The modern name was introduced in 1936; Obzor obtained town privileges on 9 September 1984.

In Hellenic times, the name of the town was Navlohos. Later, it became known as Heliopolis (Town of the Sun) and in Roman times it was given the name of Tempium Jovis (Jupiter’s Temple). During the Middle Ages the place was dominated by a fortress named Kozyak, though this was later destroyed completely by the Ottoman troops. Its present name Obzor was given in 1935. The near-by beach of Irakli and the surrounding area were once inhabited by Greek settlers who later left it and settled to live with the Bulgarians in Obzor.

Things to Do:

The town of Byala, which once hosted an ancient Greek fortress, is situated not far to the north of Obzor. In addition, the village of Emona at the Emine cape, is located a few kilometers to the south of Obzor. Emona is a picturesque settlement, famous for being the birthplace of the Thracian king Rez.

During the peak season there is a few-day rocker fair in Obzor gathering hundreds of motorcyclists from all over the country.

We hired a car with driver from the village and went to Obzor, last year when we went the season hadnt begun and it seemed very quite and a little dull, dont you believe it!!! We had a great day by the sea, with massage tables on the sands lots of beach cafes and lively hotels on the front. Also a new clock tower was officially “opened” during our stay in the town square. At the north end of the beach is a lovely fountained area with waterfalls and bridges and palm trees.

Places to eat, drink and party in Obzor:

Catering: Besides the Ticha Hotel’s restaurant, the Starata Kushta Restaurant (The Old House Restaurant) is another popular place among holidaymakers. There are small restaurants and refreshment stalls along the coast, as well as groceries. Local producers also offer fresh fruits and vegetables.

the ship on the beach obzor beach – a great little bar /restaurant built like a spanish galleon right on the beach, with fine food, fish a specialty, but also does meats as well. and salads to die for.food and drink is reasonably priced. the staff managed by bursae “if thats how you spell it” are really attentive and will help any way they can. the delightful maggi and the two boys run a tight ship this is a must on your itinerary. the ship on the beach is situated at the side of the mirimar hotel.

tania pizza – We have a place not far from obzor, and whenever we visit Bulgaria we always go to this resturant! We have introduced all our friends to it who equally love it! They do GREAT pizzas, freshly made (even the bases!!) and cooked in a stonebaked oven! LUSH! They also do a range of seafood & salads. They also do a lot of “sizziling” dishes, that are served in sizziling pots. Very reasonably priced, a small pizza is around 4lv and a large around 8lv. I have never had a bad meal at this resturant and advise everyone to try it just once! You will love it!

Getting to / from Obzor and around once there:

Transport: There is regular bus transport from Varna and Bourgas. This is complemented by private taxis and minibuses during the holiday season.

There are buses running all night from Varna airport into the city, that connect with arrivals. A good way to see what’s going on as far as arrivals are concerned, is to check-out Varna airport’s very own – small, but informative website. It’s a very quiet airport with just a handful of flights in 24 hours. It shows all the arrival times for the next 6 months. There will be a bus waiting, even if your plane was delayed until 4am. Another option is to ask one of the tourist coach drivers that’s picking up for Golden Sands or Albena, if he’s going via the city (most do) – and ask if you can hitch a lift if there’s a spare seat. It’ll cost you, but it’ll be a comfy seat and probably won’t set you back more than a few Leva. If there’s a seat, it’s unlikely you’ll be refused a ride.

The train is the fastest option by far. It’s one of the best City – City services in Bulgaria, although you do have to change trains. It’s a good time…. 09:15 depart Varna. Arrive Karnobat at 11:38 (change trains). Depart Karnobat a few minutes after 12 and arrive in Burgas just after 1pm. It’s a million times better than the bus (don’t even consider a taxi – it’ll cost you the shirt off your back). The fare is not expensive – expect to pay about 20Leva one way. Thats roughly 10euros.

Regarding buses from the airport, this says they run until 23:00. Otherwise a taxi shouldn’t be too expensive — shouldn’t be more than 10 Euros, probably closer to 5. (Paid in Bulgarian leva, which you can get from an ATM at the airport.)

The ATM’s (cash machines) at Varna airport are not currently working.
Additionally, whereas it is common belief that the Lev is pegged to the Euro, even though this may be the case, the cash desks at Varna and Sofia airports are a total rip-off and do not give the pegged rate. At present (4th Sept. 2008) the Leva is pegged at 1Leva 95st’ki to the Euro. However at both Varna and Sofia airports, they are offering just 1Leva 72st’ki to the Euro. If you have a bank card that offers free cash machine withdrawals overseas, that is your best option to get the best deal.
